DANCING BRUNO

Compagnia Sanpapié – Dancing Bruno – ph. Donato Aquaro

We open the new season at Fonderia, making just about everyone dance in an evening of about two and a half hours, where 12 artists including musicians, dancers, singers and actors, compete for the audience, challenging each other not to leave a single spectator sitting.

Dancing Bruno by the Milan-based company               Sanpapié is a ride through popular dance between the early 1900s and the early 1970s, clinging to the saddle of the history of social and political changes that have transformed the way we experience spaces, relationships, roles and steps in common.

In Dancing Bruno, irony opens the door wide to encounter and experimentation. It is a participatory experience where audience and performer merge in the same game, creating a surreal space in which time is suspended.

What comes naturally to the question is what is a dancing and especially who is Bruno.

To the first question the answer comes seemingly easy: a dancing is a dance hall before it is called a discotheque and after it has lost its definition of balera. Dancing is the middle ground where couple dancing opens up to rhythmic contaminations, cultures, forms and figures from other parts of the world. In common with the balera are the rules and, above all, the powerful voice of popular extraction, while the strain toward disco reveals a world that is broadening and opening itself to encounter and experimentation, looking at the foreigner with a fascinated and curious manner, imitating his movements, and ready to exchange its own.

And Bruno? Who’s Bruno?

Bruno is the secret word,
it is the memory that one carries within                                    oneself  forever,
        able to renew itself
        with each generation.

He, too, is a clandestine idea: that of a theater where there is no barrier between audience and stage, the secret and intimate receptacle of a popular universe in which we sink our roots, the guardian of a world that is never completely lost but is transformed it is the pole that warns us when we are in danger, to give us time to move elsewhere, to be reborn changed, contaminated… it is someone we have all met, on any corner, between any two streets, who reminds us who we are, who we have been, who we could be… it is a question without the rush of the answer and the excitement of discovery…

Compagnia Sanpapié – Dancing Bruno – ph. Donato Aquaro

Sanpapié was founded in 2008 by the will of four young people then fresh out of academy: Lara Guidetti, dancer and choreographer; Sarah Chiarcos, playwright; Marcello Gori, musician; and Fabio Ferretti, organizer, interested in investigating the depths of research without forgetting the Excel sheets.

Like all companies, in 13 years it has gone through very different phases and seasons, lost pieces and then found them again, missed trains and won calls, but it has never betrayed its original spirit: seeking the most special and impervious way to reach the heart of the beholder.

Sanpapié has been and continues to be the home of a group of artists and organizers in perpetual motion, constantly searching for new stimuli and new challenges; an extended family from Emilia-Milan-Romagna-Genoa (with flashes of Campania, Puglia, Sicily and Tuscany) that has not been afraid to grow and transform itself into a virtuous cultural enterprise. From 2015 to 2017, Sanpapié received a grant from MiBACT as a Dance Production enterprise; from 2017 to 2019, it won the Funder35 call from Fondazione Cariplo; and in its history it has performed not only in Italy but also in France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Portugal, and China.
