PATCHWORK, UN MOSAICO DI STORIE

Patchwork, un mosaico di storie, written and directed by four hands, is the result of an international co-production.
The production has two twin castles, one Italian and one Canadian. The show, more visual and expressive than words, deals with the theme of identity in today’s contemporary and multicultural society by staging the meeting of two characters who express themselves in Italian, English and French without hindering the understanding of the story.

Who are we?
How do we create our identity?

We started with an image.
A patchwork blanket, a courtepointe as they call it in Québec, made of many different pieces of fabric.

Often woven by several hands, it can tell the story of a person, an event, an entire family or a generation. It speaks of the identity made up of many different fragments, it speaks of us, and of our being multicultural, of humanity that is increasingly multicolored and multi-ethnic, but with intertwining roots.

Family stories and family trees that can only contain and be the fruit of many journeys. An identity generated by encounters and clashes, the fruit of a thousand migrations.
And so our private history, our identity, a mosaic of stories that starting from Africa with our ancestor Lucy the first Australopithecus, retraces the great journeys of humanity.

Patchwork, un mosaico di storie – ph. Gianluca Bonazzi

Two characters meet in a place without space or time.

He’s an anthropologist, she’s a seamstress and they meet for work in a place of passage, an airport.

They do not speak the same language but by communicating with looks, gestures and simple words using the narrative power of objects they create a common language that makes communication possible and fun.

Every detail of their luggage tells something, some objects bring them together, others surprise them and so they begin to tell about family trips and adventures. The meeting soon turns into a theatrical game where adults and children are involved in the reflection on two questions that have always accompanied us: who we are and where we come from.

An amusing journey back through the branches of family trees and the migrations that have built the history of humanity, to discover that, since ever, our identity is a patchwork, part of a larger story where each of us is a unique and indispensable piece.
