Project n. 2 – Edition n. 1
“Live On – live Off: the performance in the digital era – Creation and production processes for virtual stages”
Professional Area: Artistic and Performing Arts Production

A 120-hour course that provides participants with technical and theoretical tools to deepen their knowledge about the creation and production of a digital scene.

Live On – live Off: the performance in the digital era is aimed at those professionals in the entertainment and video production fields who want to broaden their knowledge: through four intensive modules between March and June 2022, thanks to the expertise and experience of the professionals involved, participants will learn how to exploit the most innovative technological tools in order to translate the live show into a digital experience.

Aterballetto - Fondazione Nazionale della Danza

The project is structured in four distinct modules. Two modules ( 30 and 35 h) are dedicated to the study of the contemporary choreographic scene, including research and development possibilities provided by technologies.

The third module, closely related to the previous one, is a 20-hour workshop in which students, divided into groups, are required to develop a project based on the methodology previously studied.

In the final module, ( 35 hours), participants will be asked to elaborate some project ideas about Cinematic VR, with a final exhibition and/or demonstration pitch.

The four modules will be delivered by experts in the field of digital creation and production, together with experts focusing on the theoretical and conceptual analysis of the contemporary creative processes in combination with technology.

MODULE 1 - 30 hours

OF PRESENCE: PERCEPTION, CORPOREITY AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES

teacher: Enrico Pitozzi

The course starts with a module focused on an in-depth ontological study of the existing connections between dance and technology in the contemporary choreographic scene.
A careful analysis of the creative processes through which the notion of theatrical presence has been redefined thanks to technology; as well as a study of the connections that arise in the immersive environment.

MODULE 2 - 35 hours

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN DANCE, INTERACTION DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE

Teacher: Roberto Montanari

In the second module students are learning to select and use innovative technologies in the design of dance dramaturgies and choreographies. And thus how to adapt them to meet the needs of the dancers as well as those of the audience.

Benchmark of the technological tools used in dance choreographies and dramaturgies and their design methodology:

  • Benchmark

    1. Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality;
    2. Cinematic VR;
    3. Spatialisation of sounds;
    4. Artificial Intelligence;
    5. vertical insights;
  • Design methodology

User Experience, Interaction Design, and Ergonomic Analysis concerning the interaction between technologies and dance.
User Experience: How does the experience of the dancers get shaped and influenced by technologies? and how can this experience become powerful?
Interaction design: Which expressive and interactive methods can facilitate this combination?
Ergonomics: What should be avoided? How should physical and cognitive dimensions be balanced in the dance performance through the use of technologies?

MODULE 3 - 20 HOURS

WORKSHOP

Teachers: RE:LAB experts

Based on the previous module, the goal of the workshop is to provide participants with the opportunity to use the methods studied and translate them into creative and technological solutions:

  • organisation methodology
  • application of the technological approach to input from module 2
  • evaluation of ergonomic aspects
  • drafting a project

MODULE 4 - 35 HOURS

CREATION OF DIGITAL SCENES

TEACHER: Guido Acampa

The module aims at increasing participants’ sensitivity and creativity through co-designing activities led by the teacher, focusing specifically on Cinematic VR.
The aim of the workshop is to realise prototypes and validate the project ideas developed by the participants divided into working groups.
